The Paleo diet, shortened from paleolithic diet is also known as the Stone Age or caveman diet. As these names suggest, the objective is to return to a more natural way of eating -the way humans ate before the agricultural revolution. While it may sound strange to return to a diet of more than 10,000 years ago, many researchers believe this is the diet that is most in harmony with our bodies.
What exactly is the paleo diet? It is actually a very basic and simple diet, focusing on fundamentals such as meat, fish, roots, vegetables and fruits. What is most interesting -and for some, difficult- about the paleo diet is what it leaves out. On the paleo diet you do not eat dairy products, grains, refined sugar or salt.
One argument for the paleo diet is that people in the world today who still eat close to the way their ancestors did thousands of years ago often do not have the kind of degenerative diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes that are so common in the developed world.
The paleo diet is not hard to understand or put into practice. What makes it hard for many modern people is that it excludes so many foods we’ve come to take for granted -pasta, bread, corn, potatoes, beans and other grains. This requires being open to a completely different way of eating.
People who are curious about whether the paleo diet can help them feel better, have more energy, improve chronic health conditions or lose weight can always try it and see how they feel. If you want to try the paleo diet, however, you have to give it a fair chance. You may feel some detox or withdrawal (from all the things your body has gotten accustomed to, whether they are good for you or not) symptoms when you first start. However, many people have found surprising success with this ancient/modern way of eating.
